Artists help raise awareness of the importance of peatland

Poetry and live performances have helped spread the word about peatland and how it can help tackle the climate and nature emergencies. 

For the Peat Bodies event, artists Manon Awst, Teddy Hunter, Mari Rose Pritchard and Julie Upmeyer shared their creative responses to Cors Bodeilio National Nature Reserve on Anglesey.

Members of the public were encouraged to walk along the boardwalk to experience objects, sounds, live performances, and poetry in Welsh and English.

The event was organised at the Natural Resources Wales (NRW) national nature reserve in collaboration with the Welsh Government’s National Peatland Action Programme and the BioComposites Centre at Bangor University, with support from Arts Council Wales. 

Peat Bodies is part of a long-term project by Manon Awst as she interprets the qualities of peatland to encourage different thinking about this remarkable landscape.

Peatland covers only four per cent of the Welsh landscape yet retains 30 per cent of our soil-based carbon.

However, with 90 per cent of peatland in a damaged condition, it currently releases greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

Combining NRW’s peatland and biodiversity expertise, and collaborating through strong external partnerships, projects such as this are contributing to Wales Peatland Action’s aim to restore functioning ecosystems to help safeguard and sequester carbon.

Manon is currently studying for a PHD at Bangor University and works as a Public Spaces Creative Coordinator at Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre in Bangor.

She said:

“The aim of Peat Bodies was to offer multiple ways of engaging with the site and seeing beyond the obvious, and for many this was their first visit to Cors Bodeilio. The weather brought drama to the event, with bursts of sunshine and rainbows adding to the sounds and visuals. It really felt as though we were collaborating with the site itself.”

Manon’s work on peatlands will continue, with further crossovers between artistic and scientific approaches and ongoing material research at the BioComposites Centre. 

Alan Whitfield, Disability Art Cymru’s Visual Arts Officer, said:

“The event was quite mystical with plenty of intrigue and room for contemplation. There was a great mix of people partaking in what felt like nature's inquisitive procession, from children engaging with the squelch of mud to adults immersing in the magnitude of the outdoor work.”

Dr Peter Jones, NRW’s Lead Specialist Advisor on Peatlands, who supported the event with scientific input, said:

“The creative interpretation was excellent. I’ve got a deep attachment to peatland and this site. I’ve spent a lot of time here thinking about wetlands, measuring water levels, recording fly orchids, and the artists’ interpretation gives a different perspective to that experience. I applaud any event that highlights the hidden qualities of peatland as the earth’s most concentrated soil carbon store.”

Artistiaid yn helpu i godi ymwybyddiaeth o bwysigrwydd mawndir

Mae barddoniaeth a pherfformiadau byw wedi helpu i ledaenu'r gair am fawndir a sut y gall helpu i fynd i'r afael ag argyfyngau’r hinsawdd a natur. 

Ar gyfer digwyddiad Cyrff Corsiog, rhannodd yr artistiaid Manon Awst, Teddy Hunter, Mari Rose Pritchard a Julie Upmeyer eu hymatebion creadigol i Warchodfa Natur Genedlaethol Cors Bodeilio ar Ynys Môn.

Anogwyd aelodau'r cyhoedd i gerdded ar hyd y llwybr pren i brofi gwrthrychau, synau, perfformiadau byw, a barddoniaeth yn Gymraeg a Saesneg.

Trefnwyd y digwyddiad yn y warchodfa natur genedlaethol sy’n eiddo i Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru (CNC) mewn cydweithrediad â’r Rhaglen Weithredu Genedlaethol ar Fawndiroedd a gynhelir gan Lywodraeth Cymru, yn ogystal â'r Ganolfan BioGyfansoddion ym Mhrifysgol Bangor, gyda chefnogaeth gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru. 

Mae Cyrff Corsiog yn rhan o brosiect hirdymor gan Manon Awst wrth iddi ddehongli rhinweddau mawndir i’n hannog i feddwl yn wahanol am y dirwedd ryfeddol hon.

Dim ond 4% o dirwedd Cymru sydd wedi’i gorchuddio gan fawndir, ond mae’n dal 30% o'n carbon sy’n bodoli yn y pridd.

Fodd bynnag, gyda 90% o fawndir wedi'i ddifrodi, ar hyn o bryd mae'n rhyddhau nwyon tŷ gwydr sy'n cyfrannu at gynhesu byd-eang.

Gan gyfuno arbenigedd mawndiroedd a bioamrywiaeth CNC, a chydweithio drwy bartneriaethau allanol cryf, mae prosiectau fel hwn yn cyfrannu at nod y Rhaglen Weithredu Genedlaethol ar Fawndiroedd i adfer ecosystemau gweithredol i helpu i ddiogelu ac atafaelu carbon.

Mae Manon wrthi’n astudio ar gyfer Doethuriaeth ym Mhrifysgol Bangor ac yn gweithio fel Cydlynydd Creadigol Gofodau Cyhoeddus yng Nghanolfan Celfyddydau ac Arloesi Pontio ym Mangor.

Meddai:

"Nod Cyrff Corsiog oedd cynnig sawl ffordd o ymgysylltu â'r safle a gweld y tu hwnt i'r amlwg, ac i lawer dyma oedd eu hymweliad cyntaf â Chors Bodeilio. Daeth y tywydd â drama i'r digwyddiad, gyda phyliau o heulwen ac enfysau yn ychwanegu at y synau a'r delweddau. Roedd wir yn teimlo fel pe baem yn cydweithio â'r safle ei hun."

Bydd gwaith Manon ar fawndiroedd yn parhau, gyda chysylltiadau pellach rhwng dulliau artistig a gwyddonol ac ymchwil parhaus i ddeunyddiau yn y Ganolfan BioGyfansoddion. 

Dywedodd Alan Whitfield, Swyddog Celfyddydau Gweledol Celfyddydau Anabledd Cymru:

"Roedd naws gyfriniol yn perthyn i’r digwyddiad, gan ennyn diddordeb a rhoi lle i fyfyrio. Roedd cymysgedd gwych o bobl yn cymryd rhan yn yr hyn a oedd yn teimlo fel taith chwilfrydig ym myd natur, o blant yn chwarae â'r mwd i oedolion yn rhyfeddu at faint y gwaith awyr agored."

Dywedodd Dr Peter Jones, Prif Gynghorydd Arbenigol CNC ar Fawndiroedd, a gefnogodd y digwyddiad gyda mewnbwn gwyddonol:

"Roedd y dehongliad creadigol yn ardderchog. Mae gen i ymlyniad dwfn i fawndir a'r safle hwn. Dwi wedi treulio llawer o amser yma yn meddwl am wlyptiroedd, yn mesur lefelau dŵr, yn cofnodi tegeiriau’r clêr, ac mae dehongliad yr artistiaid yn rhoi persbectif gwahanol i'r profiad hwnnw. Rwy'n cymeradwyo unrhyw ddigwyddiad sy'n tynnu sylw at rinweddau cudd mawndir fel y storfa lle ceir y symiau mwyaf crynodedig o garbon ar y ddaear."
