Landmark project secures funding from The National Lottery Heritage to restore the Afon Teifi and reconnect communities with nature

A major new partnership initiative to revive one of Wales’s most culturally and ecologically significant rivers has been given the green light, thanks to over £1.4m in funding from The National Lottery Heritage.

The Teifi Fyw — Living Teifi: People and Nature Together project is a conservation collaboration with a difference. It aims to respond to the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and declining river health, while recognising the deep cultural significance of the Teifi and placing local communities at the heart of decision‑making.

An initial two year development phase will bring together scientific evidence with local history, lived experience, and creative expression to ensure restoration work reflects the values of those who live and work in the river catchment.

As well as benefitting the environment, it will bring training programmes and green skills to local communities, landowners and land managers, supporting citizen science to empower people.

By reconnecting people with nature and piloting new approaches to catchment-wide restoration, the Teifi Fyw project will set out to transform restoration approaches and develop a flagship model to create lasting change elsewhere in Wales.

The development phase will lay the groundwork for a five-year delivery programme, bringing investment to the project of over £10m, subject to future funding.

The Teifi Fyw project sits within the wider Teifi Demonstrator Catchment programme, which has united partners in the catchment since 2023.

It is coordinated by Natural Resources Wales in partnership with the West Wales Rivers Trust; Mining Remediation Authority; Strata Florida Trust; Mentera; Ceredigion County Council; UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES - University of Wales Trinity St Davids and The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales.

In addition to The National Lottery Heritage grant, the project has also received funding from the Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales.

Prosiect nodedig yn sicrhau cyllid gan Gronfa Treftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol i adfer Afon Teifi ac ailgysylltu cymunedau â natur

Mae menter bartneriaeth newydd fawr i adfywio un o afonydd mwyaf arwyddocaol Cymru yn ddiwylliannol ac ecolegol wedi cael cymeradwyaeth i gychwyn arni, diolch i dros £1.4m mewn cyllid gan Gronfa Treftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol.

Mae prosiect Teifi Fyw: Pobl a Natur Gyda'n Gilydd yn gydweithrediad cadwraethol gwahanol i’r arfer. Ei nod yw ymateb i heriau newid hinsawdd, colli bioamrywiaeth a dirywiad yn iechyd afonydd, tra'n cydnabod arwyddocâd diwylliannol dwfn Afon Teifi a gosod cymunedau lleol wrth wraidd y broses o wneud penderfyniadau.

Bydd cyfnod datblygu dwy flynedd cychwynnol yn dod â thystiolaeth wyddonol ynghyd â hanes lleol, profiadau go iawn, a mynegiant creadigol er mwyn sicrhau bod gwaith adfer yn adlewyrchu gwerthoedd y rhai sy'n byw ac yn gweithio yn nalgylch yr afon.

Yn ogystal â bod o fudd i'r amgylchedd, bydd yn dod â rhaglenni hyfforddi a sgiliau gwyrdd i gymunedau, tirfeddianwyr a rheolwyr tir lleol, gan gefnogi gwyddoniaeth dinasyddion i rymuso pobl.

Drwy ailgysylltu pobl â natur a threialu dulliau newydd o adfer ledled y dalgylch, bydd prosiect Teifi Fyw yn anelu at drawsnewid dulliau adfer a datblygu model blaenllaw i greu newid parhaol mewn mannau eraill yng Nghymru.

Bydd y cam datblygu yn gosod y seilwaith ar gyfer rhaglen cyflawni pum-mlynedd, gan ddod â buddsoddiad o dros £10m i'r prosiect, yn amodol ar arian yn y dyfodol.

Mae prosiect Teifi Fyw yn eistedd o fewn rhaglen ehangach Dalgylch Arddangos Teifi, sydd wedi uno partneriaid yn y dalgylch ers 2023.

Fe'i cydlynir gan Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru mewn partneriaeth ag Ymddiriedolaeth Afonydd Gorllewin Cymru; yr Awdurdod Adfer Safleoedd Mwyngloddio; Ymddiriedolaeth Ystrad Fflur; Mentera; Cyngor Sir Ceredigion; UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES - Prifysgol Cymru y Drindod Tyddewi a'r Ymddiriedolaeth Natur De a Gorllewin Cymru.

Yn ogystal â grant Treftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol, mae'r prosiect hefyd wedi derbyn cyllid gan Lywodraeth Cymru a Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru.
