Restoration work in the River Usk will help rare and protected fish

Work is now complete to improve access for migratory salmon at Brecon weir on the River Usk.

A new fish pass was installed this summer as part of the Natural Resources Wales’s (NRW) Four Rivers for LIFE Project.

This fish pass is specifically designed for smolts (young salmon) as they migrate from the river downstream out to sea. There is already an existing Larinier fish-pass on the far side of the weir for adult salmon migrating upstream.

The new pass will help young salmon and other fish species to move freely down the river.

Brecon Weir was previously highlighted as a significant obstruction to salmon smolts migrating downstream on their journey to the sea.

Fish tracking work had shown that a large proportion smolt could be held up at the weir for significant periods during dry spring periods, making them more vulnerable to disease and predation.

Local contractor Midwest Plant Ltd completed the work which included the installation of the new fish pass as well as new fencing at the site.

The work was also enabled by the Canal and Rivers Trust who own the weir structure, and Powys County Council.

Susie Kinghan from the Four Rivers for LIFE Project said: “This work will significantly improve conditions for declining populations of fish including the endangered Atlantic salmon and will hopefully be a step towards the recovery of the species.”

“Fish tracking work on the Usk is set to continue which will help us to monitor the success of the scheme. We hope to see improvements next spring, with a change in fish behaviour and young salmon no longer held up at the weir.”

The Four Rivers for LIFE Project is funded by the EU LIFE Programme with support from Welsh Government and Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.

Bydd gwaith adfer yn afon Wysg yn helpu pysgod prin a gwarchodedig

Mae’r gwaith bellach wedi’i gwblhau i wella llwybr eogiaid mudol yng nghored Aberhonddu ar afon Wysg.

Gosodwyd ysgol bysgod newydd yr haf hwn fel rhan o brosiect Pedair Afon LIFE Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru.

Mae’r ysgol bysgod hon wedi’i chynllunio’n benodol ar gyfer gleisiaid (eogiaid ifanc) wrth iddynt fudo i lawr yr afon allan i’r môr. Mae ysgol bysgod Larinier eisoes yn bodoli ar ochr bellaf y gored ar gyfer eogiaid llawndwf sy’n mudo i fyny’r afon.

Bydd yr ysgol newydd yn helpu eogiaid ifanc a rhywogaethau pysgod eraill i symud yn rhydd i lawr yr afon.

Amlygwyd cored Aberhonddu yn flaenorol fel rhwystr sylweddol i gleisiaid eogiaid sy’n mudo i lawr yr afon ar eu taith i’r môr.

Roedd gwaith olrhain pysgod wedi dangos y gallai cyfran fawr o’r gleisiaid gael eu dal wrth y gored am gyfnodau sylweddol yn ystod cyfnodau sych y gwanwyn, gan eu gwneud yn fwy agored i glefydau ac ysglyfaethu.

Cwblhaodd y contractwr lleol Midwest Plant Cyf y gwaith a oedd yn cynnwys gosod yr ysgol bysgod newydd yn ogystal â ffens newydd ar y safle.

Hwyluswyd y gwaith hefyd gan Glandŵr Cymru sy’n berchen ar strwythur y gored, a Chyngor Sir Powys.

Dywedodd Susie Kinghan o brosiect Pedair Afon LIFE: “Bydd y gwaith hwn yn gwella amodau’n sylweddol ar gyfer poblogaethau pysgod sy’n prinhau, gan gynnwys eogiaid Iwerydd sydd mewn perygl, a gobeithio y bydd yn gam tuag at adfer y rhywogaeth.”

“Bydd gwaith olrhain pysgod ar afon Wysg yn parhau, a fydd yn ein helpu i fonitro llwyddiant y cynllun. Gobeithiwn weld gwelliannau’r gwanwyn nesaf, pan fyddwn yn gobeithio gweld newid yn ymddygiad y pysgod, ac na fydd yr eogiaid ifanc yn cael eu dal yn y gored mwyach.”

Mae prosiect Pedair Afon LIFE wedi’i ariannu gan Raglen LIFE yr UE gyda chefnogaeth gan Lywodraeth Cymru a Dŵr Cymru.
