River restoration projects to reconnect over 18km of habitat in the upper Wye

Two major river restoration projects are underway in the upper Wye catchment that will reconnect more than 18km of river habitat, improve fish passage and restore more natural river processes.

Natural Resources Wales' (NRW) Upper Wye Catchment Restoration Project is working in partnership with Powys County Council to replace two ageing pipe or Irish bridges on the rivers Cammarch and Duhonw, near Builth Wells, with new clear-span bridge structures.

The existing pipe bridges restrict the movement of fish and sediment through the river and require ongoing maintenance due to gravel and woody debris becoming trapped during high flows. Replacing them with clear-span bridges will remove these barriers, allowing the rivers to function more naturally while providing more resilient crossings for landowners.

The upper reaches of these Wye tributaries are vital spawning grounds for important and threatened species such as Atlantic Salmon. Together, the projects will reconnect more than 18km of upstream habitat for species including Atlantic salmon, lamprey and bullhead, whilst restoring the natural movement of gravel and helping ensure a clean and healthy environment required for successful egg survival. The work forms part of the upper Wye Catchment Restoration Project, funded through the Welsh Government's Nature and Climate Emergency Fund, which is restoring the condition of the upper River Wye Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Fish rescue protects wildlife during construction

Before construction work began on the Duhonw, NRW specialists carried out a fish rescue to safely relocate fish from the work area before the river was temporarily diverted.

Using specialist electrofishing equipment, the team carefully captured and relocated 5 Atlantic salmon parr (young fish), 12 bullhead, 2 eels and around 50 trout fry and parr to a suitable stretch of river downstream before construction commenced.

The rescue highlighted the importance of undertaking fish rescues before in-channel works begin, and the need for the removal of the pipe bridges.

Electrofishing is a technique used by trained operators, temporarily stunning fish before they are allowed to recover and are released unharmed into suitable habitat.

Project Lead, Susie Tudge, said:

“By working closely with Powys County Council, we have been able to progress two projects that will deliver lasting environmental benefits. Fish and other wildlife using these tributaries will feel the effects straight away, while the wider community will also benefit from healthier, more resilient rivers. At a time when our rivers face increasing pressures, we are proud to be taking positive steps to strengthen these important tributaries of the River Wye.”

The upper Wye Catchment Restoration Project works with farmers, landowners and local organisations to restore rivers across the Wye catchment through practical, nature-based solutions that improve water quality, restore habitats and build resilience to climate change.

Construction work on both bridge replacement projects is now underway.

Prosiectau adfer afonydd i ailgysylltu dros 18km o gynefin yn rhan uchaf Afon Gwy

Mae dau brosiect pwysig i adfer afonydd ar y gweill yn nalgylch Gwy Uchaf, a fydd yn ailgysylltu dros 18km o gynefinoedd afon, yn gwella llwybr pysgod ac yn adfer mwy o brosesau naturiol yr afonydd.

Mae Prosiect Adfer Dalgylch Gwy Uchaf Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru (CNC) yn gweithio mewn partneriaeth â Chyngor Sir Powys i osod strwythurau pont rhychwant clir newydd yn lle dwy bont bibell neu groesfan dŵr isel sy'n heneiddio ar afon Camarch ac afon Duhonw, ger Llanfair-ym-Muallt.

Mae'r pontydd pibell presennol yn cyfyngu ar symudiad pysgod a gwaddod drwy'r afon ac mae angen gwaith cynnal a chadw parhaus arnyn nhw oherwydd bod graean a malurion coediog yn cael eu dal pan fydd y llif yn uchel. Bydd gosod pontydd rhychwant clir yn eu lle yn cael gwared ar y rhwystrau hyn, gan ganiatáu i'r afonydd weithredu'n fwy naturiol, a darparu croesfannau mwy gwydn i dirfeddianwyr ar yr un pryd.

Mae rhannau uchaf y llednentydd hyn yn safleoedd silio hanfodol ar gyfer rhywogaethau pwysig sydd dan fygythiad, fel eog yr Iwerydd. Gyda'i gilydd, bydd y prosiectau'n ailgysylltu dros 18km o gynefin i fyny'r afon ar gyfer rhywogaethau gan gynnwys eog yr Iwerydd, y llysywen bendoll a’r penlletwad, gan adfer symudiad naturiol graean a helpu i sicrhau’r amgylchedd glân ac iach sydd ei angen i wyau lwyddo i oroesi. Mae'r gwaith yn rhan o Brosiect Adfer Dalgylch Gwy uchaf, wedi’i ariannu drwy Gronfa Argyfwng Natur a Hinsawdd Llywodraeth Cymru, sy'n adfer cyflwr Ardal Cadwraeth Arbennig (ACA) rhan uchaf Afon Gwy.

Achub pysgod i amddiffyn bywyd gwyllt yn ystod y gwaith adeiladu

Cyn i'r gwaith adeiladu ddechrau ar afon Duhonw, cynhaliodd arbenigwyr CNC ymgyrch achub pysgod i adleoli pysgod yn ddiogel o'r ardal waith cyn i'r afon gael ei dargyfeirio dros dro.

Gan ddefnyddio offer electrobysgota arbenigol, daliodd y tîm 5 o bariaid (pysgod ifanc) eog yr Iwerydd, 12 penlletwad, 2 lysywen a thua 50 o silod mân a phariaid brithyll, a’u hadleoli’n ofalus i ran addas i lawr yr afon cyn i'r gwaith adeiladu ddechrau.

Fe wnaeth yr ymgyrch achub dynnu sylw at bwysigrwydd achub pysgod yn y modd hwn cyn i waith yn y sianel ddechrau, a'r angen i gael gwared ar y pontydd pibell.

Mae electrobysgota yn dechneg sy’n cael ei defnyddio gan weithredwyr hyfforddedig, gan rhoi sioc fach dros dro i bysgod i’w llonyddu, cyn rhoi cyfle iddyn nhw adfer a’u rhyddhau heb eu niweidio i gynefin addas.

Dywedodd Arweinydd y Prosiect, Susie Tudge:

“Drwy gydweithio’n agos â Chyngor Sir Powys, rydyn ni wedi gallu bwrw ymlaen â dau brosiect fydd yn darparu manteision amgylcheddol parhaol. Bydd pysgod a bywyd gwyllt arall sy'n defnyddio'r llednentydd hyn yn sylwi ar yr effaith ar unwaith, a bydd y gymuned ehangach hefyd yn elwa ar afonydd iachach a mwy gwydn. Ar adeg pan fo pwysau cynyddol ar ein hafonydd, rydyn ni’n falch o fod yn cymryd camau cadarnhaol i gryfhau'r llednentydd pwysig hyn sy’n rhan o afon Gwy.”

Mae Prosiect Adfer Dalgylch Gwy Uchaf yn gweithio gyda ffermwyr, tirfeddianwyr a sefydliadau lleol i adfer afonydd ar draws dalgylch Gwy drwy gyfrwng datrysiadau ymarferol, seiliedig ar natur, sy'n gwella ansawdd y dŵr, yn adfer cynefinoedd ac yn meithrin gwydnwch i’r newid yn yr hinsawdd.

Mae’r gwaith adeiladu ar y ddau brosiect i ailosod pontydd bellach wedi dechrau.
